Cosmetology

Cosmetology is a professional occupation servicing clients with hair, nails, hair removal, facials, and make-up applications.  This includes chemical services related to hair such as lightening, coloring, permanent waving, and relaxing, along with cutting, shaping and styling. 

In most states, cosmetologist professionals provide nail services to include manicuring, pedicuring and artificial nail enhancements. Hair removal includes waxing, tweezing and oftentimes sugaring and other modern methods.  Facials and makeup applications can also be performed with a Cosmetologist license.

Hairstylist | Hair Designer | Hairdresser

Hairstylist | Hair Designer | Hairdresser  is a professional occupation available in some states that allows servicing clients only in the areas of hairstyling, cutting, coloring, chemical texture services, and shampooing/blow drying.

Barber

Barbering is a professional occupation servicing a client's head, face, neck or shoulders for cosmetic purposes.  This includes cutting, shaping, styling, curling, permanent waving, lightening, coloring and tinting hair. Barbers are also permitted to shave & groom the beard and facial hair and provide appropriate skin care to the face and neck.  In many states, extensions, hair pieces, extensions and manicuring is allowed.

Esthetician

Esthetician is a professional occupation providing only skin care services.  This includes massaging, cleansing, stimulating, manipulating, and beautifying the skin using either hand or mechanical/electrical devices.  Arching and tinting eyebrows, applying eyelashes and hair removal is also permitted.

Manicurist | Nail Tech

O*NET - SOC Code: 39.5092

Manicurist | Nail Technician is a professional occupation servicing only the hands up to the elbows and feet, up to the knee.  This occupation allows servicing of manicures, pedicures, and artificial nail enhancements.   Some states may have Manicurist and Nail Technician listed separately, in which case, a Manicurist is not allowed to perform artificial nail enhancements and Nail Technicians are.
